Sharing on the local network is a function that involves a number of elements external to the Heredis software.
Here are the prerequisites without which the "Share file on local network" function cannot work:
- You need to make sure that the software version installed on the computer and the application version installed on the mobile device are the same.
A share from, for example, Heredis 2022 to Heredis 2020 cannot be successful because the file formats are different.
- Device protections must be properly set up to allow sending, receiving and writing data. You can identify the active anti-virus on your Windows computers from this page : Click here
You will also find the necessary settings for Heredis to work properly.
You can find the settings to check on Mac in this article : Click here
- When you install your mobile application, you must make sure that you have all the necessary authorizations to access and share files when you launch it. These different authorizations will be notified to you by your mobile device.
- The quality of the internet network must be sufficient to allow the file to be sent and received. Make sure to check the quality of the network by following the instructions given here : Click here
- Your devices must be connected to the same network.
You will find on this page the indications to identify which network is connected : For Windows and For Mac
Make sure that there is no VPN active on your devices, you will find the necessary instructions in this article: For Windows and For Mac
- The operating systems of both devices must be up-to-date and supported by their publishers. You will find methods to identify the precise version of your operating system on these pages :
- You must check that your devices meet the minimum requirements indicated on the product sheets.
- Genealogy files should not be stored in clouds. Indeed, clouds are online storage. The very system of cloud sync creates interference on genealogy files which can result in file freezing and data loss. If you transfer the file via a cloud, make sure you download it to your devices and always use the downloaded files and not the ones stored in the clouds.
To Know
- Sharing on the local network is done at a moment's notice. Changes made on a computer after launching the function are not automatically synchronized. In order for these changes to be carried over, you have to launch the sharing again.
- Sharing is intended to link two machines only. If you want to share to a third machine, this is possible. However, you will have to be very careful about the changes you make. This use is outside the scope of the original function.
- When your file has already been shared between your two devices and you want to share the new information, the "Share on local network" function will compare the date and time of the last modifications saved on the two machines and will thus determine which one is the most recent. It is this more recent file that will overwrite the previous one. It is therefore imperative not to enter data simultaneously on two different machines because only the data in the most recent file will be kept on both machines.
- Beware of multiple files: Make sure you don't have several different versions of your genealogy file on your mobile device. This can lead to confusion.
- Sharing requires a large number of resources, it is important not to launch other actions on the computer. It is also important to be patient, it is not because you do not see anything, that nothing happens.
- Our mobile application is the same for all our users. If a malfunction is caused by the application itself, then this malfunction will be encountered systematically by all users. From this fact, which stems from a computer reality, if the malfunction is not general, then its cause comes from an element outside the application. It can be a parameter of the device or the protection systems linked to it.
The procedure for sharing on the local network
On the device that will receive the file; open the app on the home page.
On the device that sends the file, open the Heredis software, open your genealogy file and go to File -> Share on local network:

Select the destination device and click on "Share". Attention: sometimes a device appears in gray. This means that the connection is in progress. You have to wait until the device is no longer grayed out. The connection time depends on the quality of your internet network.
On the receiving device, accept the transfer. The transfer will start, the file will be opened once the transfer is completed.
If you have problems transferring your file via sharing on the local network, be sure to check the prerequisites indicated at the beginning of the article.
